As mentioned in our previous blog that Joan and I were heading to down town St. Louis. The following day was our 47th anniversary - So I needed to due something some what nice. I found this big German restaurant. We would go there and have a nice lunch (mature individuals rarely eat evening meals). Apon our arrival to this place = pictures next and I will finish this story.
So as we drive up to this place it looks great - like gone to Medieval Times type of place. So as we get to this place the parking lot is empty. Well they don't open till 11AM. It's way past that. What's going on - I drive around the building more. I figure something has to be going on. I walk u to the entrance and look in the windows - nothing. I finally see this red sheet on one of the doors. They hadn't renewed their license.
OK, so now what do we do - we head to St Louis. We were heading there any way - we will just be hungrier when we get there. So we figure their should be something nice down by the Arch. So as we are checking out the Arch -
We are looking for some place nice to eat - which turns into something to eat. There is a casino down there. The ones we have in Biloxi has killer food. So as we go into the casino and ask the security guard about the restaurants. He informs me that since covid they haven't returned to normal. They have a little café and a Pizza place. So we go to check out the cafe - don't bother. Five star pricing with one star food.
We went back to the base and prepared to leave the following day. But before we did there was another item that I was fascinated about -
Now I have seen tubes similar to this at major air ports but not at a small Air Force Base. Above these tunnels are a taxi way for planes.
As we departed Scott AFB and informing our selves that there really wasn't anything there to attract our attention - unless we took up golf. This would be a good base for passing through - not worth a week stay. As we umped up on I-70 and headed west we went past the Cardinal Stadium. Great view from where we were sitting.
We left Illinois and entered Missouri on I-70 to travel into Kansas. We bypassed Kansas City (which we had been to in one of our previous stops. But this time we were spending a couple of nights out side Topeka Kansas. We figured we should be able to find some real western hospitality and maybe some of the old wild west days. Before I get into that - Did you know that part of I-70 coming out of Kansas City is a toll road! We traveled almost the end of that toll bit and got off on exit 262. To head to this KOA campsite called hill top - it was on a hill side and it was off of a gravel road. I thought I was heading back to my grand parents and my youth, but a lass I was in a class A motorhome towing a car. You can't go that fast. The camp ground pictures below.
It was a nice place to stay for a couple of nights. For me it was a moderate drive six hours. Our next leg to Buckley SFB (Space Force Base) was a ten plus hour drive. We went past Ft Riley on our way in I think I will shoot for that if I come this way again. The last time I came across here I was on the secondary roads. I will do anything to avoid I-70 in Colorado. I don't know what they do with there road takes but they are not spent on the roads. We left Kansas and nice roads. As soon as we hit the Colorado roads we were bounced every where. We finally arrived out side Denver at Aurora and Buckley SFB. It was cold, rainy and miserable. The winds blew almost all night. They blew so hard we thought our slide topers would be ripped off.
