Verdi Canyon

Next day’s trip was a train ride through the Verdi Canyon. My GPS always gives me options. We took the scenic road there. We felt like we were back in Germany with all of the switch back roads. It was a beautiful drive. Remember we started at almost 7,000 feet and were heading to a canyon. As we came out of this downhill spiral we ended up at The Verdi train station. At the bottom of the mountain we ended up going through the town of Sedona.

Sedona Arizona – what a beautiful city.  We finally arrived at the train station. There weren’t any regular tickets so we ended up going first class – we were glad we did. The train trip through the gorge was four hours. We were glad to have plush seats instead of wood benches. The drinks and food along the way helped as well.

Meteor Creator

Our next stop on our way back to Flagstaff was the largest crater created by a meteor – so named Meteor Crater. I was surprised to see that the circumference was almost exact – as if it came straight in. As I watched the video of it – it seemed to come in on an angle. You would have considered it to be an angle in within the earth. Oh Well! It is a big hole for a small meteor that hit.

Winslow Arizona

Our first ports of call are places we went past heading to Flagstaff. The first one I couldn’t remember why until I looked at some pamphlets. It was Winslow Arizona. It was the song by the Eagles – Take It Easy – that mentions standing on the corner in Winslow Arizona. There is a statue there. I can understand why they would mention about standing on the corner there. It is on Route 66 and there are some nice murals on the walls – but there is nothing there – not even a decent place to eat!

Departed Oklahoma Ciy

We are now two locations later. That is what happens when you have no internet or very poor internet. A lot has happened since my last posts. But before I start on our current adventures I must mention something that was neat back in Oklahoma on route 66. If you take route 66 East out of Oklahoma City there is a portion of the road that has those very annoying groves. But these groves are not annoying they are unique – at least they were to me. There is a sign before informing you that if you go 25 MPH while driving over the groves it will play God Bless America – It did and it was unusual.
OK so we departed New Mexico and headed to Arizona. Now as usual I try to stay at military bases and this stop was to be no different. So my book shows a FamCamp for Luke AFB, which is outside of Phoenix, but we are heading to Flagstaff (which has an elevation of almost 7000 feet). Phoenix is 140 miles south of us and this place is in the woods. That’s OK it is a great place to stage out of.
